Dufferin Grove Green Roof Car Port

Graffiti-Resistant, Shou Sugi Ban Car Port

This Green Roof-ready Car Port, constructed and accessed from a laneway in the Dufferin Grove neighbourhood of Toronto, was designed with privacy, safety, graffiti-resistance, and durability in mind. A row of horizontal louvers allow air to flow freely, while providing privacy from the high-rise neighbours beyond. Shou Sugi Ban, a chemical-free Japanese technique of charring wood, provides an elegant natural finish while protecting the cedar siding from the elements, and from graffiti. The operable overhead garage door was wrapped in a colourful abstract composition (complete with anti-graffiti and UV coating for easy maintenance and lasting colour) which simultaneously deters vandals while hinting at the nature of the green roof and garden beyond.
