Third floor addition and full interior renovation

This third-floor addition and full interior renovation of a 19th century semi-detached home in the Riverdale Pocket sought to add space for a growing family by expanding a previously-captured third storey.

Sustainable helped maintain the character of the existing house inside and out, while increasing openness and natural light, improving the functionality of each floor level, and creating a connection to the back yard.

The ground floor is made from thick polished concrete, a large "thermal mass" that will also reduce heating bills by absorbing excess heat and by passively regulating it throughout the home. The house faces south which makes use of overhangs to shade summer sun to further regulate interior temperatures.
