We’re Looking for a Building Scientist!

 

Sustainable is a full-service, collaborative architectural practice rooted in Toronto. Our focus is to provide solutions using core principles of sustainability and building science, delivering healthy and high-performance projects at many scales.

We are seeking an enthusiastic Building Scientist to join our collaborative team of architects, building scientists, and designers. This position is available immediately. The successful candidate will enjoy energy modelling, detailing, and solving problems related to building construction and sustainable design. We are seeking a motivated candidate to lead the development of our building science team!

Education and Experience:

  • Professional degree or diploma in Building Science or a related discipline

  • 3+ years previous professional experience in Building Science or energy related discipline

 

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong technical knowledge of building science fundamentals and good technical knowledge of building enclosure design and construction principles.

  • Strong understanding of construction practices and appreciation for building materials and how building enclosures are constructed.

  • Ability to effectively detail cold-climate building envelopes.

  • Strong interest in energy efficiency, durability, and green building design.


  • Knowledge of green rating systems, including but not limited to LEED, WELL, Passive House, and Living Building Challenge.

  • Strong proficiency in energy modelling software, preferably IES VE, Energy Plus, and/or Hot2000 (or other).

  • Proficiency in THERM, WINDOW, WUFI, HEAT3 is considered an asset.

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD programs such as SketchUp and Revit is considered an asset.


  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, Excel PowerPoint and Word.

  

  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite such as Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of the current edition of the Ontario Building Code (including SB-10 and SB-12 for energy efficiency) considered an asset.

 
 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support to design and production teams as required to convey technical information related to

    building energy use and sustainable strategies.

  • Perform design drawing review and assist with building enclosure design to prepare complete building envelope

    detailing packages for residential and commercial projects.

  • Participate in meetings with design team members and advise on building enclosure design and detailing.

  • Perform hygrothermal (WUFI) and thermal (HEAT3, THERM, and WINDOW) analyses on enclosures and assemblies.

  • Use energy modelling software to perform building envelope optimization and whole-building energy use optimization

    analysis on residential and commercial projects.

  • Prepare energy modelling reports.

  • Perform research duties for various building science and energy research projects. Compile and analyze data, produce

    reports and presentations.

  • Coordinate and prepare documents for LEED, WELL, and Passive House certification.

  • Participate in integrated design charrettes to optimize passive design strategies during early design stages.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.

  • Ability to work well in a collaborative environment.

  • Develop and manage relationships with clients (new or existing).

  • Participate in business development activities, marketing and proposal preparation.

  • Supervise junior staff on projects and liaise with Project Principals.
